Stainless steel is known for being corrosion-resistant, but that doesn't mean it is incapable of showing rust.  If the stainless steel is exposed to damaging chemicals, or is submerged in water or exposed to extreme heat for extended periods of time, this can lead to corrosion.

Therefore, we recommend the following when cleaning and caring for your stainless steel items:

Remember to use soft cloths or other non-abrasive pads when cleaning and scrubbing your stainless steel items. Stainless steel items will have visible polishing marks on the surfaces; you should scrub in direction of the polishing marks. If the polishing marks cannot be seen, simply use a soft cloth or plastic scouring pad.

If your cleaning solution contains chlorides, switch to an alternative. Work with alkaline, alkaline chlorinated or non-chloride containing cleaners. To avoid pitting and rusting, don't use cleaners containing quaternary salts.

Always rinse, then wipe down your stainless steel items when chlorinated cleaners are used. Ensure the stainless steel items are dried immediately. Do not leave them wet. Wipe off the leftover water immediately. This is specifically important when it contains cleaning agents.

Hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) should never be used on stainless steel items.

Proper longterm maintenance also involves regularly restoring, or passivating the stainless steel.
